About

Humanitarian Affairs focuses on humanitarian operations around the world working to administer aid to the people who need it the most. Humanitarian Affairs, and in particular the Millenuim Development Goals (MDG's), are an important sector of the United Nations work.

The United Nations Association of New Zealand recognizes the importance of the MDG's, and is committed to educating New Zealanders on the importance of these goals and encourage individuals to do what they can to make poverty history.

On this page you will find information about what New Zealanders can do to help achieve the Millennium Development Goals, what other NGO’s and individuals are doing around the world to promote change and development, and current events and news about events related to humanitarian affairs.

National Council Report - February 2011

In Memory of Arthur George Valentine

The 2011 has started with news from Northern Region Branch - Branch President George Valentine has passed away. A memorial service for George was held on Thursday February 3rd at St Matthews in the City. George was our NRB president for almost a year and brought enthusiasm, leadership, members and new ideas to our branch.

We will miss him for, among other things, his input into a variety of matters at both branch and national level, his hospitality while hosting meetings at his house, and his involvement in events and occasions with members of our branch outside of UNANZ activities.

I take this opportunity to acknowledge the overwhelming sympathy messages UNANZ has passed on to the Northern Branch, George’s family and friends.

Council of International Development (CID)

At the end of 2010, members of Council International Development were advised that Jamila Homayun had taken the ‘NGO liaison and disaster coordinator’ position, starting 10 January.   A very brief summary of Jamila’s background was given as below:

Jamila worked with Arms Division, Human Rights Watch (Washington D.C.), Refugee Services (Wellington), UNHCR (in Syria), Cluster Munitions’ Coalition/Oxfam (including organizing the Wellington conference in 2008 with extensive MFAT discussions). She has also worked in NZAID and Department of Labour and did a report recently for Oxfam International on the Arms Trade Treaty involving NZ as a case study.

UNHCR Annual Consultations

NGO & Refugee Representatives Dialogue

The United Nations High Commission for Refugees, Regional Office makes annual consultations with stake holders - especially NGOs and community organisations that work with refugees in New Zealand. UNANZ was privileged to be invited and had a private meeting with the regional representative Mr. Richard Towle and UNHCR legal protection officer Mr. Mike Clayton after the consultations.

On the behalf of UNANZ, I and Audrey passed the greetings from our National President Michael Powles to Richard Towle.

The UNHCR representative was pleased to learn Michael Powles is our President and mentioned that he will be happy to continue working UNANZ relationship and need be he will contact Michael when he comes to Wellington. At the end of the meeting the representatives from UNANZ and UNHCR agreed to promote the World Refugee Day 2011 through other partners.

I conclude this report by wishing all the members of United Nations Association of New Zealand, the successful year 2011 we have started

The United Nations Millennium Declaration

The UN Millennium Declaration, signed in September 2000, established the Millenium development goals. The goals seek to comprehensively address a range of manifestations of poverty by 2015.

Following the lead of the UN in this important initiative, The United Nations Association of New Zealand is committed to educating New Zealanders on the importance of these goals and encourage individuals to do what they can to make poverty history.

We also advocate for, and support, Governemental action toward the realisation of the goals.

For more information on what the MDG's are, their history, and UN efforts to acheive them, please take a look at the United Nations Website.
